“Something Did Survive”

With a fury loud as thunder
Our world was torn apart
Hurling chards of broken dreams
Flew out from our shattered hearts

But you weren’t just a lover
You were also my best friend
Until that fateful day arrived
And it all came to an end

I couldn’t cry upon your shoulder
Or lay in your arms till dawn
For when I lost your love I knew
Our friendship, too, was gone

So many times I thought of you
And longed to hear your voice
To ask how things were going
But I felt I had no choice

No choice because our friendship
Perished with the love we shared
That was until I saw your face
And learned we both still cared

You had felt the same way
And you, too, missed your best friend
As we talked and listened
We felt our hearts begin to mend

Amidst the pain and heartbreak
We learned something did survive
Although it wasn’t quite the same
Our friendship was alive
