“Ode to Tennyson”
(who said: it is better to have loved and lost,
than not to have loved at all)
Some would rather be alone then to have loved and lost someone
They say it’s just not worth the pain when all is said and done
They fear that if they shared a love with one who’s soon departed
It would leave more pain and heartache then if it never started
But being Love’s proponent and someone whose felt it all
Let me tell you why I think it’s really worth the fall
Whether you’ve had love gone wrong or been alone for all your years
You know that haunting heartache that leaves pain and scars and tears
Without a love you’re always safe; none can play with your emotions
But if you give yourself to love, it fills you with devotion
You’ll have the chance to share your dreams
And you’ll feel you’re understood
You’ll find an inner strength and a warmth that feels so good
You’ll whisper things into their ears and share sweet kisses in the night
You’ll snuggle close together convinced this love is right
You’ll feel their breath upon your skin and look into their eyes
And share a laugh at funny things that take you by surprise
You’ll drink champagne and maybe too make love by candlelight
You’ll dance to slow, soft music and gaze up at starry nights
You’ll have your share of sadness too, but now you’re not alone
You have a caring shoulder and someone to call your own
For those who never take a chance on love that comes their way
Never have those memories to ease their empty days
Years may pass and you might find that the love you’ve always shown
Has not made them turn away; in fact, their love has grown
But if the worse should come to pass and your love comes to an end
At least you’ll have love’s memories which will help your heart to mend
