“Infatuation”

As you look into my eyes, there's a smile on your face
You brush against me gently then stand awkwardly in place
I get that funny feeling and the rumors have begun
Your infatuation's blossomed and my instinct is to run

Now it's not that I'm afraid of love; the opposite is true
But infatuation's different and I dread it like the flu
It always comes on strong pretending that true love's your destiny
You think you've found a perfect mate and the love that's meant to be

Somehow I'm put upon a pedestal by one who thinks I'm just the best
Until he soon discovers I'm not much different from the rest
I don't know when or where I'll fall from his pedestal so high
Once he sees I'm only human I get mad and yell and cry

The problem's been he can't see me or hear the words I say
He gets so wrapped up in his ideal he hears "night" when I say "day"
How can love start or have a chance if he blind to who I am
He'll never see my weaknesses or know when to hold my hand

I never feel I'm needed to support his fantasy
I might as well go on my way God knows he won't miss me
I'd walk away and leave my cardboard figure in my place
Then I'd return to find he'd married it
And see three kids around my waist

So here's the lesson I have learned
And one I hope you will remember
When someone ignites a spark
Leaving that warm and glowing ember

Don't anticipate their answers
Really listen to what they say
And when their words surprise you
Let the chips fall where they may

Know their faults and weaknesses
Not to belittle or abuse
But so you'll know to be there
When their spirit has been bruised

When you see the person
Beneath the image that you love
You may find out they're better than
The person you dreamed of
