His fragile bones sat in a chair with
an old photograph in hand
In it he was lean and tall, a suave and handsome man
Back then his hair was full and blond instead of thinning gray
He once was strong and virile and his smile could brighten any day
In his youth he was indestructible, spirited and carefree
He believed he could do anything and he knew how his life would be
He remembered his enthusiasm with his heart so full of faith
There wasn't any room for fear, he was surely in God's good grace
But his best-laid plans were not to be and the failures took their toll
Doubt riddled through his body destroying his spirit and his soul
Soon he gave up trying, and worse, he gave up on himself
His faith had taken its last breath and he put his dreams upon a shelf
He mourned the man he used to be as the tears rolled down his face
How different life just might have been if he had only kept his faith
